The magazines in the 1950s were the powerful media that affected the public in terms of their life style and culture. Editorial cartoons and narrative comics, published in women's magazines, in which main characters were women had specific social perspective on women. This paper as part of the research on Korean Modern Art History focuses on the fact that female images in cartoons published in women's magazines in the 1950s reflect social discourse at that time. There is a reason why cartoons published in magazines were chosen as the subject of study. That is because cartoons exercise imagination to be represented to easily understand the society and cultural changes at the time. American culture had great influence in the 1950s through media. Cartoons satirized women's interest in their appearance and their behavior following the trend. Modern women were described as westernized with short haircuts and high heels. Magnificent visual experience leads to reproduction of urban space, so a cafe, a department store, streets with skyscrapers are introduced as a scene in cartoons. Meanwhile, a charismatic 'housewife' emerged as the new image of married women. One of the subjects described in cartoons was women's entry into society. Cartoons ambivalently depicted women who work and engage in economic activities with expectation and concern. Housekeepers were one of the underprivileged people and often appeared in cartoons as a distinctive character in the 1950s. Cartoons used the female image of housekeepers who had a traditional appearance so as to convey Hyeonmoyangcheo-ism and culture which women at the time were required to have. Hyeonmoyangcheo-ism was found in cartoons where characters of unmarried women said and acted in a way they put great emphasis on marriage and where characters of housewives, which had emerged as the new charismatic image, became conservative again in the late 1950s. Describing women dressing up in front of a mirror and being conscious of men's gaze was the process of objectifying women, which was different from what had been expected of women in an image of a middled aged women in Hanbok: a devoted mother and housewife. Meanwhile, between the late 1950s and the early 1960s, female characters became more conservative. Cartoons in popular magazines in the 1950s introduced standardized women characters to sometimes depict women portraits which the society required, and to describe the opposite women portraits with a good sense of humor other times. Contrary to paintings, women in cartoons are more direct, epic and satirical. It seems, on the surface, that cartoons chose women as the main character to focus on her and expand her social role. After all, however, they ended up describing the ideal women image that the society wanted women to be.
